Spain and Portugal have long been favorite holiday destinations of sun-starved northern Europeans. But in recent years, a wider set of travelers are flocking to the Iberian Peninsula to discover its world-class golf resorts, wine country retreats, beachfront hotels, and other pilgrimage-worthy stays. Read on to find out which properties earned top scores in this year’s Travel + Leisure survey.

How Voting Works

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, inn, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Rooms/facilities
  • Location
  • Service
  • Food
  • Value

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

What Readers Loved

In last year’s survey, only one Spanish resort ranked as a top stay. This year, all top three winners are located in Spain, with the No. 1 spot going to a hotel that opened just over a year ago in one of the country’s top wine regions. While Mallorca has seen its share of new openings since last year’s survey, with additions including Richard Branson’s Son Bunyola Hotel & Villas and the artist-launched Hotel Corazon, T+L readers voted the Cap Rocat as their favorite stay on the Mediterranean island. “This is possibly the best hotel in Spain,” gushed one reader, echoing another respondent who said, “Cap Rocat is in its own category of hotels, unlike any other.” Meanwhile, on the Costa del Sol, the iconic Marbella Club earned the No. 2 spot, usurping last year’s winner, Finca Cortesin Hotel Golf & Spa, as readers’ favorite Andalucian stay. Travelers loved the hotel’s beachfront perch on Marbella’s Golden Mile, its world-class wellness programs, and its expansive kids’ club, which has been hailed as one of Europe’s best.

Despite being just a two-hour drive south of Barcelona, the wine region of Priorat has never been on most travelers’ radars. But ever since Gran Hotel Mas d’en Bruno swung open its doors last spring, that’s all beginning to change. The former 18th-century farmhouse is surrounded by lush vineyards and features 24 suites with double-sided fireplaces, beamed ceilings, and pops of warm hues in a nod to the region’s famous red wine varieties. T+L readers loved lounging around the property’s wine bottle–shaped outdoor pool, and enjoying decadent treatments inside its grotto-like spa, which carries products by Barcelona’s Natura Bissé beauty brand as well as naturopathic remedies from Herbarium Scala Dei, a locally owned business located just up the road from the property. For wine lovers, the hotel can arrange tastings at all 114 producers in the region.
