Whether your warm weather plans include swimming in the waves or lounging poolside, we tested 66 swimsuits in various styles, sizes, and colors to put together the list below of the best options for any adventure. After trying out dozens of bikinis and one-pieces, we narrowed our list down to our 13 favorite swimsuits. Because swimsuit shopping can be a difficult task, we had two different team members try the same bathing suit styles to thoroughly compare and contrast the fit, comfort, quality, performance, and coverage for different body types. Our list of top performers includes bikinis and one-pieces with a mix of retro, size-inclusive, trendy, and sporty designs for all style preferences. What to Consider We needed to adjust the straps once the fabric was wet. Andie’s The Amalfi one-piece comes in a variety of fabric and fit options so you can pick and choose the exact swimsuit style you’re looking for. Whether you’re in search of full, medium, or cheeky coverage, this scoop-neck swimsuit has plenty of options to choose from, including classic or long torso fits. The swimsuit runs true to size, and the straps are adjustable. Plus, there is a built-in bra shelf with removable padding that offers medium support, which is best for leisurely water activities. When the nylon blend fabric got wet during our tests, it didn’t bunch or stretch in the body of the swimsuit, but we did need to adjust the straps for a tighter fit while in the water. In under an hour, the swimsuit fully air-dried and looked good as new without shrinking or stretching after we wore it. The fabric and stitching are high quality, and the cut is comfortable for lounging or swimming all day long — perfect to pack for a beach vacation. The Details: XS-3XL | Classic and long torso lengths | Full, medium, and cheeky coverage | Removable cups | Adjustable straps | Nylon, spandex Travel + Leisure / Frances Crouter Most Comfortable One-piece Robin Piccone Ava One-Piece Swimsuit PHOTO: Robin Piccone $148 $93 at Amazon $85 at Nordstrom View on Robinpiccone.com Why We Love It Made with nylon and spandex fabric, this suit is perfectly soft and stretchy. What to Consider It’s a bit pricier than our overall pick. If you’re in search of a simple and chic one-piece swimsuit, this elevated selection from Robin Piccone is a great option. The nylon and spandex material is buttery soft while still having a comfortable amount of compression whether the suit is dry or wet. While this swimsuit doesn’t have as many customizable options as the Andie one-piece, it still has helpful features like adjustable straps and removable padding. The fabric is the perfect thickness and is very supportive on its own, but we appreciate that the top of this one-piece has a built-in bra shelf for a range of bust sizes. The suit comes in seven sizes in classic colors like black, white, red, or navy blue, and runs true to size so order what you normally wear. The price point is a bit higher than our overall pick, but the high-quality materials and comfortable fit of this one-piece make it worth it for travelers with a slightly higher budget. The Details: Sizes 2-14 | Medium coverage | Removable cups | Adjustable straps | Nylon, spandex Travel + Leisure / Ivy Ford Best Sporty One-piece Body Glove Smoothies Mylene One-piece Swimsuit PHOTO: Amazon $98 at Amazon View on Bodyglove.com Why We Love It The slim scoop neck and full coverage design are ideal for more rigorous water activities. What to Consider The T-strap back can slide around a bit, and it’s not adjustable. This one-piece from Body Glove is the ultimate sporty swimsuit that doesn’t look too “Speedo” sporty. Whether you’re surfing, snorkeling, or swimming laps in a pool, the full-coverage bottoms and higher neckline will prevent any unwanted slips while enjoying activities in the water. Plus, it has more of a modern look thanks to its slim scoop neckline and T-strap with a low dip in the back, and the fabric and design have a versatile shape for both long and short torsos. The suit runs true to size, and while we wish the T-strap in the back was adjustable, the built-in bra shelf with removable pads helps with support in the bust. When it comes to comfort this one-piece truly shines, as it provides a comfortable fit with lightweight nylon and spandex material that doesn’t dig into the skin or ride up whether you’re in the water swimming or wearing clothes on top of the suit. What to Consider It doesn't offer much support in the chest. Everyone should have at least one swimsuit in their closet that is just as fashionable as it is functional like this one-piece from Farm Rio. It has a cut-out silhouette with the option to wear the suit with spaghetti shoulder straps or opt for a strapless look. Travel + Leisure editor Taylor Fox wore this one-piece on a trip to Miami and loved that it could be paired with a sarong or skirt to go from the beach to an oceanside restaurant for lunch. Whether Fox was in the water or lounging by the pool, the swimsuit fabric was soft and smooth, and stretchy enough that it didn't ride up too much. She wished the torso was a bit longer to match her frame, but the removable straps help support the chest to avoid any mishaps while swimming or walking. What to Consider There are just two color options. Size-inclusive, buttery soft, and supportive, Adore Me created what Fox calls "the most comfortable two-piece swimsuit I have ever worn." The best part of this bikini set is that although it comes as a set, you can still choose sizes of the top and bottom separately to get the most customized fit possible. With cup sizes ranging from A to DDD (30 to 38 band sizes, too!) and bottom sizes going up to XL, the option to mix and match measurements made it easy (yes, easy) to shop for a swimsuit online. Whether swimming in the ocean or relaxing on a pool lounge chair, Fox loved how lightweight the fabric remained when it was wet, and both pieces were plenty supportive for various activity levels. While Fox tested and loved the flattering high-waisted bottoms, there is an option to get a bikini bottom, too. Considering the quality, comfort, fit, and affordable price, Fox returned home from her trip and bought the suit in another color — a true testament to its value (if you weren't already sold yet). What to Consider I would have sized up one for the top looking back. Monday Swimwear is now my go-to brand for suits after I wore the Clovelly top and Argentina bottoms on a trip to Greece. I was initially skeptical of the underwire cups since I haven't loved that style in the past, but I was impressed with how supportive and discrete the underwire was right off the bat. The bottoms are high-waisted with a high hip cut and cheeky coverage, which I found to be flattering and comfortable without feeling bulky or frumpy. My favorite part of the swimsuit is that it's stylish but supportive enough to wear for activities like swimming in the ocean or pool. The only slight downside is that the sizing can be difficult, so I highly recommend using the size chart to find the right fit. Next time, I'll size up one for the top, but the size I initially got still worked well for me. What to Consider The fabric on the bottoms can bunch awkwardly. Timeless and versatile, this triangle string bikini from Target is the perfect addition to your swimwear wardrobe. This set is not only superaffordable, but it still feels high quality and durable for the lower price tag. One of the best parts of this bikini set is that you can style the matching string bottoms to your preferred coverage. The wrap-around ties allow swimmers to either bunch the front and back fabric together for less coverage or spread it out for a more modest look. The top offers the same option to modify your coverage, making this bikini versatile for any style preference. Although the top and bottom are sold separately, the total comes out to less than $50, which is a steal for this simple, stylish, and functional bikini. The Details: XXS-XL | Adjustable back and top ties | Removable cups | Polyester, spandex Travel + Leisure / Chloe Caldwell Best Halter Bikini Boden Ithaca Halter Bikini Top and Panelled Bikini Bottoms PHOTO: Boden View on Bodenusa.com Why We Love It The material feels very high quality, and the design is stylish with a sporty edge for versatility. What to Consider The top didn’t feel as supportive for larger chests. Boden’s Ithaca Halter Top Bikini offers shoppers the perfect balance of sporty and stylish. The polyamide and polyester blend fabric feels luxuriously silky and soft whether the swimsuit is dry or wet. While the swimsuit runs true to size, the tie-top felt a little less supportive than other bikini tops we tried, so swimmers with bigger busts might want to opt for a top with more supportive straps. To match the deep V-neck top, the Panel Bottoms offer full coverage with a low-rise fit that feels very secure, especially for swimming in big waves or getting in and out of a pool frequently. Plus, the swimsuit comes in a variety of colors and patterns to choose from, including chic color-blocked black-and-white option or navy blue-and-white polka dots. The Details: Sizes 2-18 | Adjustable top tie | Removable cups | Polyamide, polyester PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Eliza Savage PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Eliza Savage PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Eliza Savage Best High-waisted Bikini Left On Friday Sunday Top PHOTO: Nordstrom View on Leftonfriday.com Why We Love It The deep V-neck top complements the retro high-waisted bottoms. What to Consider The top doesn’t have adjustable straps or padded cups. High-waisted bikinis usually have a retro flare, but this set from Left on Friday has a sleek and modern design for any activity near the water. The Sunday top and Hi Hi Bottoms come in a whopping 35 colors so you can mix and match the top and bottom colors or opt for a monochrome look. We found that the top runs a bit small and has similar compression to an unpadded sports bra, so if you need a bit more coverage or want a looser fit, consider sizing up. However, the bottoms run true to size and offer medium to full coverage without compromising on range of motion or mobility. The bikini set is very comfortable, and the nylon blend fabric dries incredibly quickly when laid out, taking just a little longer to dry when it’s still on your body. The Details: S-XXL | Nonadjustable straps | No cups | Nylon, polyester, lycra PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Anna Popp PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Anna Popp The 14 Best Sarongs for the Beach Best Size Options, Bikini Tempt Me High-waist Two-piece Swimsuit PHOTO: Amazon $36 at Amazon Why We Love It There are over 40 color options to choose from in 10 sizes. What to Consider You can’t choose different sizes for the top and bottoms. The retro style of this bikini and its variety of sizes make it a winner compared to similar styles we tried. It comes with a sweetheart bikini top with push-up padding to complement the high-waisted bottoms with ruching in the bodice. With sizes ranging from XXS to 22 plus, there are eight sizes in between and an impressive 44 color options. The only downside to getting a bikini that comes in a set is that the top and bottom will be the same size, so you can’t mix and match the sizes. However, this set runs mostly true to size, leaning slightly toward the smaller end of the spectrum, so you may want to size up. The halter straps are adjustable which helps with tightening the top for extra support, and the ruched bodice has tummy control with a comfortable amount of compression. Note that the thicker nylon fabric takes a bit longer to dry. The Details: XXS-22 plus | Full coverage, high-waisted bottoms | Adjustable tie top, clasp back | Nylon, spandex PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Hildara Araya PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Hildara Araya PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Hildara Araya Best Sporty Bikini Athleta Triangle Bikini Top PHOTO: Athleta View on Gap.com Why We Love It The recycled nylon material feels very thick and reminds us of a sports bra. What to Consider The deeper neckline could be more supportive, especially for those with larger busts. Athleta managed to find the perfect balance between sporty and stylish with this triangle bikini top and matching full-coverage bottoms specifically designed for surfing, paddle boarding, or snorkeling. The recycled nylon fabric is thick and compressive with a near sports bra-like feel. The scoop neck top gives the bikini a stylish edge, but you may need to tighten it for extra support because of the deeper neckline. The criss-cross back tie is easy to adjust and loops in four different places in the back to add extra security for rigorous water activities, and the fabric is made with UPF 50+ sun protection. Although it’s designed to be quick-drying, we found that it took a few hours to dry completely. The brand has a solid reputation for quality, and the fabric and stitching of this suit matches that expectation, so we feel confident the bikini will have a long life span. The Details: XXS-XL | Adjustable back tie | Removable cups | Recycled nylon, lycra PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Sophie Mendel PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Sophie Mendel PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Laurel Randolph Best Coverage, Bikini Robin Piccone Ava RP Bikini Tee and Ava High Waist Bikini Bottom PHOTO: Robin Piccone View on Robinpiccone.com Why We Love It The cropped, T-shirt-style top complements the slightly high-waisted bottoms for a modest and stylish bikini set. What to Consider The shirt-style top differs from a typical bikini top design, which may not be to everyone’s tastes. If you’re looking to veer away from the typical bikini top style or looking for more coverage, we highly recommend the Robin Piccone Ava top and matching bottoms. The top looks like a short-sleeve T-shirt with a front-tie detail offering complete and supportive bust coverage with slightly high-waisted bikini bottoms. Most notably, the premium feel of the micro nylon material and the durable construction of the top and bottom make this bikini set a standout option. The material feels thick yet lightweight, and we found that the texture and comfort don’t change regardless of whether the swimsuit is wet or dry. It may take a bit longer for the suit to dry because of the heavier fabric, but it’s worth it for the support and comfy compression it provides. What to Consider I recommend hand-washing to swimsuit to keep it in the best condition. As someone who likes to bring multiple swimsuits on every trip, I love that this string bikini top and bottom from Aerie are easy to pack and can be styled in multiple different ways. I tied the top into a bandeau and scoop neck shape on a trip to Greece, and I was also able to turn the strings into shoulder straps when I needed more support for rigorous water activities like boating or snorkeling. Since the suit offers multiple styles in one, I can bring fewer swimsuits on every trip moving forward (saving me suitcase space). Plus, the fabric has UPF 50 sun protection built into the fabric, which helps for being out in the sun. I also love that you're able to mix and match Aerie swimsuits by purchasing each piece separately, so I got this scoop bikini top that matches the same bottoms. The Details: XXS-XXL | UPF 50 | Recycled polyester, elastane PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Anna Popp PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Anna Popp PHOTO: Travel + Leisure / Anna Popp Our Testing Process To find the best swimsuits on the market, we tested 66 bikinis and one-pieces and compared them based on fit, comfort, quality, performance, coverage, and value. We had two team members try the same two swimsuits in varying sizes and compared the testing notes to find the ones that earned the highest praise. We made sure to walk around, sit, and even do squats in each swimsuit to test the range of motion and comfort level, and we got each swimsuit thoroughly wet for at least five minutes to test the performance and fit, again squatting in the wet swimsuit. After getting the bathing suits wet, we wrung them out and hung them up (not in direct sunlight) to see how quickly they dried. Whether we were swimming in the ocean or lounging poolside, the best swimsuits we tried ran true to size; were made with durable and comfortable fabrics; and boasted helpful features like adjustable straps, removable cups, and built-in bra shelves. Tips for Buying the Best Swimsuits for Women Consider the different styles Swimsuits come in various sizes, colors, and styles, which can be overwhelming to shop for. Regarding bottoms, the general coverage range is full, medium, and low, and the cut can be anything from high-waisted to low-rise or deep-V. Bikini tops and one-pieces can come in strapless, scoop-neck, square, or triangle necklines, and you’ll want to check the specifications to see if a top has built-in bra shelves for one-pieces or removable padding. With so many options, you’ll likely want to try a few different styles to see which ones are best for your body. If you plan on participating in water sports or doing something active in your swimsuit, you may want to look for something more secure, like a top with a pullover style rather than a string bikini. Use the sizing charts and specifications Since sizing can be a tricky part of shopping for a swimsuit online, sizing charts can be helpful for getting the right fit. The specifications section can also help you determine the fit, as the swimsuit brand (or the reviews) will usually mention if the swimsuit runs big or small, if the straps are adjustable, and if there are removable cups. You can bust out the measuring tape to get your most exact measurements, and compare them with each brand's size chart. Frequently Asked Questions How do I wash a swimsuit? We always recommend deferring to the instructions on the swimsuit tag or the website. However, if the washing instructions aren’t listed, you can machine or hand wash the swimsuit in cold water and gently ring it out to air dry. If the material looks delicate, opt for hand washing. Should swimsuits have a loose or tight fit? Generally, you’ll want to get a swimsuit closest to your measurements so the fit is snug without feeling restrictive. You should still be able to have a full range of motion without any fabric or seams digging into your skin.
